Different Problems That Can Affect the Eyelids
There are several different types of annoying problems that can affect a person’s eyelids. While some of them are known for causing a great deal of discomfort, there are others that are simply embarrassing and unpleasant to look at. Then there are also some swellings and bumps that form on the eyelids that are not very noticeable at all. Below are some of the most common types of problems that are known to affect the eyelids.
Papilloma – This refers to growths of skin that can appear on the margin of a person’s eyelid or directly on the eyelid. The color of a papilloma can range from a light pinkish color to black. These growths do not affect a person’s health and they are usually not very easy to see, as they tend to be quite small in size. However, if they become bothersome, they can easily be removed under local anesthesia.
Infected eyelash follicle – Eyelashes on the eyelids grow in the very same way that other hairs on the body do. On occasion, the follicles the eyelashes grow from can become infected. When this happens it is not unusual for the follicle to become red and swollen just at the edge of the eyelid at the eyelash’s base. A whitehead of pus known as a sty is what causes the swelling to appear.
Chalazion – This type of swelling is painless and it forms at the outer-most edge of the eyelid. This is where the meibomian glands are located that help to provide lubrication to the outer edge of the eyelid. When they become blocked, a chalazion will often form. It normally takes about one month or so for this type of growth to disappear on its own. You can however lightly massage the eyelid, moving your fingers gently to the outer edge. In some situations larger chalazions can form and they can also become infected. When this happens, it is necessary to seek professional medical attention. In either event, it involves a local anesthetic which will allow the doctor to remove the contents of the growth.
Sty – Once a sty forms it can take as long as seven days for it to finally burst. Up to this point it can cause a large amount of discomfort. A hot compress can also be added at the first sign of inflammation, causing a head to form that will allow the infected eyelash to be removed. At this point it is important to wash the eyelid thoroughly. This is because any trace of the infection left behind can actually cause another sty to form if not cleaned from the eyelid properly. If you have repeated problems with a sty forming, an antibiotic may be necessary to completely get rid of the bacteria causing the infection.
Xanthelasma – This refers to fatty material that appears in yellow patches just beneath the skin of the eyelids. Although it is a simple procedure to remove these patches, it is not at all uncommon for them to appear again.
